The Price of Garlic In Nepal Soared Due to the Stop of Import From China

Last Sunday, Nepal's retail China Garlic Price imported climbed to an all-time high. This is mainly because the country's imports from China have stopped since the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

According to the kalimati fruit and vegetable market development committee, the price of dried garlic doubled in two weeks. Binaya Shrestha, deputy director of the board, said the outbreak of the new coronavirus was the main reason for the rise in garlic prices.

"Garlic in Nepal is imported from China. Everyone knows of the outbreak in China, which led to the closure of the border between China and Nepal. As supply stopped, importers raised the stock price, "Shrestha said.

He said the country relies on imported garlic at this time of the year, when domestic stocks run out and are considered to be off-season. According to the Commission's figures, Nepal imported 203 tons of garlic from mid December to mid January last year. However, according to the Bureau's data, between January 15 and February 2, garlic imports totaled 98 tons.

Garlic prices in Nepal have risen, and onion prices in the country have risen a few weeks ago after India, Nepal's main onion supplier, restricted exports.
